- Chairman of Newlin Investment Company LLC since 2007.
- Chairman since 2009 and director since 2005 of Plextronics, Inc. (www.plextronics.com). Headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, Plextronics, Inc. is a clean-energy technology company that specializes in printed electronics, specifically solar cells and energy efficient lighting. The company’s primary products are conductive and semi-conductive inks that can be used to print electronic devices — including organic photovoltaics (OPV) and organic light emitting diodes (OLED) — using low-cost manufacturing techniques. It was founded in 2002 as a spin-out of Carnegie Mellon University.
- Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer from 2003 to 2007 of Dick's Sporting Goods, Inc. His duties at Dick's included at different times overseeing finance, law, internal audit, human resources and strategic planning, and also serving as a member of the real estate committee. He also had principal responsibility for acquisition and major licensing and product development agreements.
- Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 2003 of Buchanan Ingersoll, one of the 100 largest law firms in the United States. As a lawyer, he focused on corporate and venture capital financing and corporate governance. He oversaw what the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette called the "spectacular growth" of Buchanan Ingersoll and encouraged and fostered the advance of technology to diversify and strengthen the region's economy.
- Chairman from 1996 to 2002, lead director from 2002 to 2006 and currently a director of Kennametal Inc. (www.kennametal.com), one of the world's leading producers of cutting tools and wear-resistant parts. He serves on the governance committee and is chair of the compensation committee.
- Presiding Director since 2007 and Director since 2004 of ArvinMeritor, Inc. (www.arvinmeritor.com), a first-tier international supplier to the auto and trucks industry. He is chairman of the compensation committee.
- Chief Strategic Advisor and a Director since early 2008 of Etcetera Edutainment Inc. (www.etceteraedutainment.com). A 2005 spinout of Carnegie Mellon, Etcetera Edutainment (www.EtceteraEdutainment.com) is a software company that applies simulation and videogame technologies to increase retention of workplace training. Current game-based products target the industrial safety training market.
- Director since 2006 of Calgon Carbon Corporation (www.calgoncarbon.com), a global leader in services and solutions for making air and water cleaner and safer.
- Since 1999, Bill has been with his son (who is CEO of Black Dog, LLC,) actively engaged in the franchise business, owning and managing multiple franchises and locations at U.S. airports.
- Director since 2007 of Plano Molding Company (www.planomolding.com). Plano Molding provides consumers with storage systems and organizer for both indoor and outdoor applications.
- Co-founder in 1980 of the CEO Venture Funds, which has been a second state fund for developing technology companies in the Mid-Atlantic region and remained principally active until about 2003. As part of that experience, he served on many boards and provided the same kind of advice that the Fund will provide.
The National Law Journal twice recognized Bill as one of "The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America."
He was a founding director of the Pittsburgh Technology Council.
In 2001, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named Bill Newlin one of the 50 top business leaders in the city. Pittsburgh Magazine named him in 1999 among the "Most Influential Pittsburghers of the Century." From 1994 to 1996, Bill was chief advisor for Mayor Tom Murphy during drawn-out, difficult negotiations to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates in the city. In 1999, he helped broker a deal to sell and reorganize the bankrupt Pittsburgh Penguins to NHL superstar Mario Lemieux.
Bill graduated from Princeton University, has received the University of Pittsburgh Law School's distinguished alumni award and was awarded an honorary doctorate of business administration degree from Robert Morris College.
